Barrenjoey Headland Project Update – October 2024

Construction of new amenities for Barrenjoey Headland started in early July 2024. Work is progressing well. Earthworks were completed in July and August.

In early September, concrete for the footings and slab of the new building was flown in by helicopter. Plumbing services below the finished floor were completed, and the concrete slab is now done.

In late September, a helicopter operation transported concrete and materials for the walls and roof. With fine weather in September, the work program remains on track.

Visitor access during construction

Access to Barrenjoey Headland and the lighthouse will remain open during the construction period and access trail upgrade works. However, visitors may experience changes and restrictions, including:

  • Increased vehicle movements to the headland and the lighthouse via the beach and service road.
  • Pedestrian access will be retained throughout construction via Smugglers Track.
  • The Barrenjoey access trail will be closed Monday to Friday to allow contractors to access the site and undertake maintenance work.
  • No visitor access to the south-eastern part of the lighthouse and below the Head Lightkeepers Cottage. This area will be fenced for construction and materials storage.
  • Temporary closures of the headland or parts of it during helicopter operations to deliver materials (this is necessary to manage load limits on the access trail).

During construction, visitors can continue to use the temporary amenities, which will be removed when the permanent amenities are operational.
